Last weekend I attended the penultimate gig at Old School Studios which featured Hello Bear, the Nirvana-esque spirit of We’ll Be Detectives, and Saturday Morning Breakfast Show, stepping in at short notice for Violet Kicks as Jessie had all but lost her voice.
Mr. Jason joined Hello Bear at the end of their set, along with Hot Raisin Tory for a rendition of Lake Combover’s 2002 with the positive Everything Will Be Alright message. The incredible sound of this venue sure will be a big loss to Norwich, the sound here is as good as anything I have ever heard.
Friday 21 April saw the final gig here, some unfortunate football traffic meant I did not see Norton II but I did catch the end of Peach Club’s set and they sounded better than I have ever heard them. The final set was provided by the incredible dirty, garage punk blues of Beast With a Gun who showered us with vinyl at the end but not before playing a few farewell songs with Mr. Jason, and all of this was followed by some fun live jamming. Beast with a Gun play at The Waterfront next month, supporting Jim Jones.

We’ll Be Detectives

Beast With a Gun
There were plenty of musicians in attendance at these gigs and so much love – it was obvious the amount of affection there was for both Jason and the Studios, especially during moving speeches from Hello Bear, Hot Raisin and Beast With a Gun saying what the Studios meant to them and their appreciation of Jason’s support over the years and his ear for great sound. The end of an era and undeniably a big and sad loss for Norwich music.
An amazing few days but I’m certainly feeling sleep-deprived now! Two consecutive gigs with a sense of loss not far from the thoughts but with uplifting great music. Big thanks to Jason, all the acts, plus Mary and Tory.
