Big Top Cinema – O Brother, Where Art Thou? 8 July 2016

A magnificent collaboration of exciting event heavyweights Bo Nanafana and Maui Waui takes place at the Earlham Park Big Top on Saturday 9 July with a masquerade ball which features The Shooting Stars, Dj Keb Darge, Dj Vesna Ernst, Parisien electro swing Kabaret, Aerialism Circus, Cabaret from Josephine Shaker and burlesque from Natalya Umanska. The warm-up for this, on the Friday, came in the form of a huge screening with equally huge PA with great sound for one of my favourite movies, the Coen Brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou?  There was hot food, popcorn and bars plus a live band around the film, the band put together at really short notice and featuring several Norwich bluegrass notables.  It was a wonderful event, the band playing together for the first time and given the working title on the night of the Soggy Bottom Big Top Boys kept everyone entertained before and after the film and even during the short refreshments intermission half way through the film where the canvas screen backdrop was kept rolled down and the band appeared as backlit silhouettes … reminiscent of 1960-70s Czech shadow puppets!

The place was pretty full and everyone adored the music, charmingly giving the film a rousing round of applause at the credits and I loved that the band played Man of Constant Sorrow in their final set after the film, after a request from an audience member referencing the film, for some “Old timey music.”
