Lord Mayor’s Celebrations 4 July, Norwich Lanes Fayre 5 July 2015
Once again Norwich celebrated another BIG weekend, with the traditional Lord Mayor’s Celebrations which of course included the procession but also a fair at Chapelfield Gardens with bands playing for BBC Introducing in the bandstand, music taking place all over the city, most notably at the Bo Nanafana stage in Chantry car park, Chapelfield which headlined with two sets by the brilliant Shooting Stars ahead of a superb firework display with an American 4th July theme. The crowds were huge with a tremendous atmosphere on one of the hottest days I can remember for years.
In contrast Sunday started with some heavy downpours just as the Lanes Fayre was about to kick off. I gave up waiting for a respite and cycled into the city getting drenched in the process … and typically it started to ease off as soon as I arrived. There were more stages all over the place again with The Piratones playing near Ali Bongo’s, an all dayer from Maui Waui at St. Gregory’s Green, Upper St. Giles hosting its own street fayre with an extraordinary gig by The Neutrinos in the Klang Haus, and of course a packed St. Benedicts with music on the streets, the Arts Centre Bar, and some incredible stuff at St. Margaret’s Church of Art. What a day and what a weekend. I was able to reflect upon all of this with friends around a campfire in a garden when it finally got dark. Isn’t Norwich just brilliant?
