4D Jones, The Lovin’ Handful, Blood Bird at Jug Jaw’s Beat Club in Bedfords Crypt, Norwich. 7 May 2015
It’s been a while since the last Jug Jaw’s Beat Club (due to the touring commitments of Kill It Kid) and I had been pining for one of these nights for a while. Tonight they returned with one heck of a bang!
An eventful day being the occasion of not just Jug Jaw’s but also Chris’ birthday and the small matter of a general election. It was much better to be here than watching coverage of the election though, and clearly a great many other people thought the same thing with Bedfords Crypt absolutely rammed and also Sophie Little and Gary Standley of BBC Norfolk Introducing in attendance with a film crew.
Chris and Steph got the ball rolling with a brilliant short set as Blood Bird which closed with the crowd singing Happy Birthday to Chris as Simon of Bedfords presented him with a charming birthday cake.
There was no set from Lank Smith and the Pythons tonight although they were all here, three of them playing in the next band … the fantastic Lovin’ Handful. Their set went down a storm with the crowd singing along to well chosen and played covers such as Minnie the Moocher. Fantastic fun and although we didn’t have inquisitive police officers coming down for a peek at the fun goings on there were many other passers by reacting in just the same way. I think this Jug Jaw’s was up there with the likes of that one as one of the best.. but they always feel that way.
And so to 4D Jones, who I saw recently at an incredible gig in the Ribs of Beef which was unforgettable. This one was even better in the perfect venue. Such a tight, great and fun band belting out songs that they love and the audience love. The place was heaving and dancing and even the band said it was perhaps the best and most fun gig they’d ever played. It showed and felt that way. Absolutely amazing night at Jug Jaw’s, we are so lucky to have this – it’s our 60s Cavern and it’s rammed every time, rightly so. 4D Jones through the vintage equipment sounded sensational. Can’t wait for the next one, nor to see all these bands again too.
More photos to follow.
Many thanks to Chris and Steph, The Lovin’ Handful, 4D Jones, Bedfords Bar.
