Hannah Rickard and the Relatives at The Owl Sanctuary, Dove and Boweevil at The Plasterers, Norwich 25 January 2015 (photos not to be used without permission)
The countless gigs taking place in Norwich certainly do not diminish on a Sunday, in fact Sundays are feeling like the new Friday night in the city with it being possible to do gig crawls of seven or eight gigs throughout the day. I however only went to two, starting off with an early evening session from Dove and Boweevil for The Plasterers Sunday Funday. It was a very pleasant and convivial couple of hours of blues music and friendly company in one of my favourite pubs … however, one of my over-riding memories will be having a slice of “Angry Polish Wife” pizza – from the top end of the “hot and spicy” selection of delicious on-site pizzas – and the hysterical sight of several others feeling its hot effects for some minutes afterwards … well, it was Burns’ night! Lauren and Mark may have thought one of their songs really was taken to heart seeing the tears in the eyes of many listening, although on this occasion the Angry Polish Wife was wreaking havoc!
Afterwards I headed up the road with some friends to see Hannah Rickard and the Relatives at the Owl Sanctuary. I’d only found out about this gig earlier in the day but was so glad I did (a quick look at the promo video on their website was all it took to convince me.) I enjoyed the laid back bluesy rock and roll with deliciously smooth vocals from Hannah and fine playing from all the musicians. A decent-sized crowd danced throughout in a highly enjoyable evening. A relaxed and friendly pub with pints at £2.50 and an excellent free gig makes it even more of a winner, I enjoyed the evening tremendously and have the songs of Hannah and the Relatives in my head still, the following day.
They also an extremely photogenic band but I did actually put my camera away at one point to just enjoy the great music, only to scrabble around for it again at the end for the rock moments and antics involving the double bass.
