Bootleg Swing – Festive Special at Norwich Arts Centre. Wayward Natives IV “Balls to Winter – Let’s Get Tropical” at Bedfords Crypt, 5 December 2014. Review and photos by Richard Shashamane. Photos not to be used without permission or without credit/links back.
The latest Bootleg Swing was a Christmas special at the Arts Centre and featured once again the Moonshine Swing Seven band, who were in very fine form and played a couple of sets, with a burlesque cabaret appearance by Natalya Umanska during the interval … on a bed of nails! At the beginning of the evening we had a dance lesson from the excellent Earl Harlem and Tracey of Swing City, with a good number of people learning or practicing some Charleston steps. The audience looked superb, almost everyone dressed in vintage style with several Al Capones spotted. The bar were serving cocktails and the whole mood was really friendly, relaxed and fun. The Art Centre seemed to be continually filling up throughout the night and by the time the band played their second set the dancefloor was full and looked great.
Later in the evening I headed to Bedfords Crypt for the fourth Wayward Natives set with a selection from the Mammal Hands boys, this one an anti-winter selection of tropical funk, latin, and calypso. Here too the Crypt was absolutely rammed and with quite a heady atmosphere of great music, dance and smiles taking us into the early hours and forgetting the first sharp winter frost taking place outside.
Many thanks to Bootleg Swing, Norwich Arts Centre, Wayward Natives, and Bedfords
