“Bojangles” – Bo Nanafana in The Spiegeltent, for NNF14, with The Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band. Norwich, 16 May 2014, review and photos
A Bo Nanafana night in the Spiegeltent during the Festival is always something special with the perfect ingredients combining for a huge, exciting and colourful blowout of entertainment, dancing and dressing up.
Tonight we had some cabaret, music played between acts by Greg Butler (Greg’s Greats) of the Shellac Collective, and headliners the wonderful Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band, who played some beautiful vintage jazz, even some ska, which was lapped up by everyone in the room, especially some of Norwich’s finest swing dancers. The band’s unusual name is taken from the spasm bands of old New Orleans who played on home made instruments, and the Rabbit Foot Minstrels, a troupe who included Bessie Smith. The band themselves have played Ronnie Scott’s and also the festival circuit including Glastonbury and Bestival. The accomplished playing showed throughout the night and describe their playing as “Jump Steady Jazz”, and themselves as Red Wine Socialists. At times there is some ska to their sound and they have a rip-roaring brass section. Great fun.
All in all, another brilliant, brilliant Bo Nanafana, I am bumping into people who are still buzzing from this one!
Many thanks to all at Bo Nanafana, The Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band, all the acts and artists as well as everyone who allowed me to snap them during the night!
