Gossamer Thread’s Greatest Show on Earth, at Norwich Arts Centre, Saturday 5 April 2014. Review and photos.
Saturday was another sell out crowd for Alex McAleer and Daisy Black’s amazing Gossamer Thread‘s Greatest Show on Earth, and as soon as one entered the Arts Centre foyer area there was a Wow! factor. Drapes and decorations, walkabout cabaret from Hocus Pocus Theatre and Dirty Feet Productions, bearded lady all gave the impression of turning the NAC into a carnival big top. The effort and effect was brilliant. In the bar area DJ Earl Harlem was playing tunes and had the place dancing before the acts, during the interval, and well after the show in the auditorium had finished too.
Gossamer Thread’s Vaudeville Co. is basically Daisy Black and Alex McAleer with their incredibly diverse array of talents from hula hoop trapeze, mind-reading, walking on broken glass, razor blade swallowing and more. Together they have formed this Vaudeville company and invite their exceptional guests to take part in these marvellous cabaret nights.
This evening was compered by Peter Antoniou and featured superb acts all the way through the evening, including amongst others, the clever songs of Below The String, the wonderful Velma Von Bon Bon as Natalia Kalashnikov, The Lost in Translation Circus, plus of course some stunning performances from Daisy and Alex themselves. The show ended with an incredible performance from Daisy Black and Joanne Jordan with some beautiful aerial hoop skills. They are currently offering weekly classes in Norwich for aerial and hula hoop at http://www.norwichcircushub.org.uk
A really wonderful night of talent, fun, laughter, music, skill and beauty. Pure, fun escapism from our 21st century world and superb entertainment from beginning to end.

GOSSAMER THREAD’S VAUDEVILLE CO.
Gossamer Thread’s Vaudeville Co. consists of the many and varied talents of
aerialist, razor-blade swallower and spinner of flaming hoops Daisy Black, and Alex McAleer, who combines contemporary mind reading with a flair for showmanship.
“They are exceptionally talented at what they do… They innately seem to understand the alchemy of telling a story onstage… Their work is innovative and familiar, exciting and emotional, and utterly wonderful to watch.” – Vivacity Bliss, producer of Cabaret Roulette at Madame Jojos, Soho.
From a family of artists and showmen, Daisy cultivated a head for heights by working as a theatre lighting technician for six years, before joining the circus and scaling the dizzy heights of the big top. An accomplished hula hooper, she also turned her sights to sideshow and vaudeville, about which she is also writing a novel (having spent the last year on the prestigious Creative Writing MA at the UEA).
Alex has been performing as Alex the Mind Reader for over six years, wowing corporate and cabaret audiences across the UK. He is also a successful writer within the magic world, having written several books on his own techniques and lecturing to mentalists, psychology students and even magicians at the prestigious Magic Circle.
Between them they have devised an entire cast of eccentric vaudevillian characters, including masochistic lovebirds Carny & The Tramp, who have a penchant for dangerous displays of public affection; delicate aerialist Liliy Gild; supernatural mime Ernst; star-crossed automatons the Love Machines, and more, all ‘curated’ by the elusive and ubiquitous Gossamer Thread.
As well as all all the acts being available individually, along with Alex and Daisy’s own acts, all the characters will collide in their two-person show which is currently in development, due to debut in 2014.
They have performed everywhere from a traditional big top circus, an array of cabaret nights, London’s international Burlesque Festival, festivals, private events and weddings.
Many thanks to Daisy, Alex, all the artists and performers, and Norwich Arts Centre.
