Tribe: Whiskey and Music Festival at The Talk, Norwich. With The Vagaband, Redlands Palomino Company, Troubadour Rose, and Steve Arlene. Review and photos.
I’ve never attended a whiskey tasting before but something about the combination of that and some great Americana acts in the beautiful Talk was mouth-watering. Dominic Roskrow deserves praise for putting this event together and for the vast array of incredible whiskies on offer. The ticket included a voucher for no less than ten whiskey samples, and all of the ones I tried were divine – the favourite one of all however was actually Dom’s own recipe which was full of flavours that came in waves.
There were also lovely hot snacks available and of course some very fine music, started off by Steve, of the rarely seen live but magnificent Arlenes. The mighty Vagaband were headlining and sandwiched between these bands were the impressive Redlands Palomino Company, and Troubadour Rose.
The ever-brilliant Vagaband were playing as a full eight-piece and Jose was wearing an incredible blue suit. Whistling Song has without a doubt now become my new favourite, so I was delighted to hear it tonight.
The music between acts was provided by local legend Hank Jd Sleek and his Hillbilly Hayride. Also performing Friday night (28th) at The Rumsey Wells.
I hope Dom will be putting on more events of this nature, it massively enjoyable and quite unusual, it deserves a good audience. All the bands somehow managed to resist getting too drawn into the whiskey tasting and put on professional and soulful sets. The Talk is a glorious and unpretentious venue, my only slight criticism would be that of an LCD screen just above the stage which just looks totally out of place. It wasn’t too bad with a still graphic but with rolling images it is an unwelcome and unnecessary distraction while the acts are playing. It didn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the evening though which was superb and in great spirit, literally.
These are exciting times for The Talk, which is shaking off its image and will be hosting a wide variety of regular music nights, notably by Hubs.
