Sometimes before a gig I will pop into my favourite fish and chip shop, The Grosvenor Fish Bar opposite The Birdcage. In fact they have a lovely arrangement with the also wonderful Birdcage where chips can be eaten there, and on Fridays is the special Fizz and Chips day.
The Grosvenor has been revitalised in the past couple of years or so, the owners having a great attitude and vision for the place. Relaxed, informal and with a wonderful closing time policy of “7-ish” pm, depending on how busy they are. Always worth popping in after 7pm as they are frequently open later than that and you will not be made to hurry your food if you’re eating in. Anyway, the “Gone Fishing” sign will be up on the door when they are closed!
The serving counter is just inside from the front door, and this level has some counters and seating for a dozen or more, with loads more room downstairs.
It has a lovely ambiance with swing music playing in the background and the recently refurbished and reopened downstairs area is deceptively spacious and available for functions/parties. With wood flooring, wood panel walls and corrugated sheeting this is such a unique place. Featuring alcoves, nooks, crannies, and secret rooms in an underground bunker setting. Who could have imagined a Cold War bunker could make for such a cool dining area. It is brilliant!
It’s easy to see why this place is thriving, they do what they do well. It’s friendly, informal, unique … and of course the chips and rest of the food on offer is delicious!
The Grosvenor Fish Bar shall also be taking part in the Jack Is Back, Valentine’s Eve event in the Lanes, serving heart shaped chips! ❤
