“Lights Out” Serious Sam Barrett, Feral Mouth, Addison’s Uncle at The Bicycle Shop, Norwich, 11 July 2013, review
This was the rearranged gig from a couple of months ago, which was initially due to be held at House cafe and was cancelled late in the day. On this occasion it was also supposed to take place at House but on the evening was hastily and luckily rearranged for The Bicycle Shop.
Opening the evening tonight were Addison’s Uncle (minus fiddle player Georgia but featuring the tireless James Maas on uke). I’ve seen them quite a few times just recently and it was good to hear them in a venue like this. I especially enjoyed the final two or three songs which included Norman Wood and Gypsy. The lyrics, songs and playing are very clever.
The Handlebar audience seemed to include a very large number of Norwich musicians, which I think is testament to the playing skills of Serious Sam Barrett who was on next. Hailing from Leeds he plays a superb blend of blues, country, bluegrass and Americana with a wonderfully English twist and he has an excellent voice. I believe he is a long time acquaintance of the Feral boys, who have invited him down here a few times before and I hope this will continue, I’d like to hear him again.
The Bike Shop seemed incredibly dark tonight, to my tired eyes, but Feral Mouth performed a great treat for the ears with another storming, lively set, the newer numbers rapidly becoming some of my set favourites.
Inevitably, with so many musicians present there was a lovely moment of some jams and new song previews in the mellow post-gig mood, which was a privilege to be a part of.
