The event of the Port Isla ‘Adventurers’ single launch was to be my first visit since the Birdcage was recently refurbished (my last visit was also to see Heart of a Dog and Port Isla!) A great little venue in the heart of Norwich, and always a pleasure to see these acts from Alex Carson’s Barefeet Records. People who know me will already know that I am a huge fan of Milly Hirst and Heart of a Dog who together are about to embark on a short UK tour, where the rest of the country will have a chance to discover what Norwich has been enjoying for quite some time.
The sublime Milly delivered another set of some of my favourites to an audience who she held under her charismatic, mesmerising spell, what a voice and talent she has! I am in awe when hearing her and thinking of new ways to describe this extremely talented artist. Her use of space in the songs, deceptively simple guitar work, hypnotising and growing, whilst her voice expresses emotion effortlessly and with the power to silence any bar, her singing style is so expressive and just carries you into her tales.
Heart of a Dog are really on top of their game these days too and performed another hugely enjoyable set. The first time I saw them, a year or so ago, I was really quite taken with their sound, and bought their EP and downloaded other tracks from their site, their songs are extremely catchy, in a subtle way that creeps up on the listener after two or three listens.
The exhuberant and talented Port Isla are a band who also seem on the verge of some wider recognition, played a loud and lively set to a very appreciative and enthusiasic crowd. To download the new single visit http://www.portisla.com This is a band surely destined for bigger things, they have the sound, the style, look and songs and seem ready for the moment. What is also very gratifying about all of these bands and musicians, is that they are also all extremely lovely and likable people, who are all modest and unassuming.
