I saw Gerard & the Watchmen, also with Heart of a Dog, at the Bicycle Shop last year, and having bought and got to know the EPs from the band I was looking forward to seeing them in this lovely and intimate venue again, especially as local favourites Heart of a Dog were also on the bill.
Opening the evening was Jessie Moncrieff, self-described Aussie in a Joy Division t-shirt now living in London 🙂 She has a beautiful voice and played a lovely set of storytelling songs accompanied by her acoustic guitar. I enjoyed this very much and bought her EP ‘Georgie’ which is very good indeed.
Next up were Heart of a Dog. I love this band and they seem to get better each time they play. I have a few favourites in their catalogue, one of which is ‘Hits from the Show’ with its lovely harmonies and with some encouragement from Sam “the howlers” in the audience joined in some of the gentle howls 😉 This was also the first occasion I had seen Ian on bass with the band, and he seemed to fit in seamlessly.
And so for the final set of the evening, Gerard and the Watchmen – including Jessie Moncrieff – played a lovely, charming and entertaining set, with some very witty chats between songs 🙂 Jessie on fiddle performed beautifully too, and for their final track, they did the lovely touch of walking around the packed and tiny venue, without amplification, Jessie sat on a small table playing the fiddle by candlelight. Beautiful!
